A bold and inventive recording of traditional Estonian song from an artist deeply rooted in tradition yet utterly unafraid to explore her imagination and embrace the apparent limitations of the seven note kannel.
12 tracks arranged for solo 7-string kannel (archaic plucked lyre) and voice with sparing accompaniment by hiiu-kannel (bowed lyre) and guitar (long neck, fretted lyre).
The CD comes in a heavyweight gatefold laminated digipack with postcard by illustrator Peter Stevenson.

lyrics
Kui miä kazvolin kanainõ,
nõizin neito noorikkõinõ.
Tune called “Pakri valss” traditional From Pakri island.
Menin marja muilõõ mailõõ,
kana muilõõ kallailõõ.
Tšäin tšüläz rohkaap muita,
makazin vähepii muita,
tein tüütä enepii muita,
sištši en kuulu kunniaasõõ.
Nimi tõinõ muutõttii
perkeleessi kutsuttii.
Tune called “Pakri valss” traditional From Pakri island.
Kui miä kazvolin kanainõ,
nõizin neito noorikkõinõ.
Eestikeelne tṍlge:
kui ma kasvasin kanakene
(nõizin) noor neiukene
kuue venna veeres
seitsme onu nõjal.
kaheksa minia (nadonne)
vennad kutsusid mind õeks,
venna naised (naossi),
isa kullakeseks,
ema ehtis lahkelt.
Läksin, mari, muule maale
kana, teistele kallastele.
Tegin tööd teistest rohkem,
magasin teistest vähem,
käisin külas teistest vähem.
Siiski ei kuulu ausse,
nimi teiseks muudeti,
põrguliseks kutsuti.
KANNEL captures many worlds into one free from political borders, referencing historical influences in traditional music but confidently eschewing populist expectations; it is natural, focused and fresh music: rooted but free.
They've got such an unique sound, nothing like it in the World. Artfully groovy and boldly beautiful with lots of scholarly work behind. Explosion of feelings expressed skilfully through music. Cool! Sille Ilves
Distinctive and different from what may well be the only recorded music available from Christine Cooper. Constantly revisiting to remind me just how good this is and to wish Christine well for the future. badgerist67
